Recent work
Known for a calm, strategic approach, Stephen is committed to telling important Australian stories to the world. Most recently he produced Four Years Later, a drama series for SBS shot across India and Australia in 2024, now available on SBS On Demand.
In 2023 he was Executive Producer on the feature film Savage Christmas, now streaming on Foxtel's Binge.
Selected productions
Previously he produced Hungry Ghosts for SBS, Secret City 2: Under The Eagle for Foxtel, which is also streaming globally on Netflix, the International Emmy® winning series Safe Harbour for SBS, and Oddlands, a film with Back to Back Theatre for the Adelaide Film Festival and ABC Arts.
In 2016 he developed and produced the series Hyde & Seek for the Nine Network.
How he works
Stephen is a highly experienced international multi-genre producer, working across conception, IP acquisition, development, direct physical production, management and financial oversight, scripted projects, sales, strategic partnerships, and co-productions.
He is recognised for socially resonant stories with global appeal and real production scale.
Working across Asia
He has a strong interest in stories exploring Asian themes, and has built experience in the region by supervising production shoots in India, Vietnam, Japan, Bali, Singapore, and Hong Kong.
Career foundations
His career began at the Australian Broadcasting Corporation as a producer and director. He has also worked in Italian television and in the London office of NHK Japan.
In 2000 he produced the Icelandic feature film Ikingut before returning to Australia and going on to produce with Burberry Productions.
Screen agency and independent roles
From 2005 to 2007 he was Film Victoria's, now VicScreen's, Investment Manager, spearheading the government screen agency's production investments across feature films and television drama.
He followed this with roles including Project Manager for the Film Finance Corporation, now Screen Australia, and Development Producer for Ruby Entertainment, where he also produced the narrative comedy series Whatever Happened to That Guy? for Foxtel.
Fremantle years
From 2009 to 2015 Stephen was Fremantle's Drama Development Producer, where he created, developed, and produced Devil's Dust for the ABC. The project garnered numerous awards, including a Logie Award for Most Outstanding Actor and a NSW Premier's Literary Prize.
He also conceived and established the development of the series Mr & Mrs Murder for the Ten Network, and developed and produced Better Man for SBS.
Better Man won a Silver Logie and numerous other awards, including Best Direction, Cinematography, and Best Sound.
In 2014 Stephen developed and produced the Nine Network telemovie Schapelle.
Beyond production
Beyond his professional achievements, he is an avid traveller with experience living and working in the UK, Italy, and Iceland. He loves culture, music, and design, and is a strong advocate for diversity and inclusion.
